ASSUMIN?
I can’t wait for the day when I wake up and think to myself, ” I have now reached old age and can cease any and all fucks given from this point foreword.” being an old man is gonna be awesome.
It seems to me that there has been a great deal of confusion lately regarding the concept of freedom of religion and the separation of church and state. I use the word confusion because I cannot bring myself to believe that the anger, hatred and overall outrage in this country stems from a comprehension of the sentiments behind and meaning of these concepts. Human beings, although often foolish and quick to respond negatively, are at their core a species capable of rational and logical thought, and no such being could conceivably get so angry at such an innocent and simple idea. Therefore, I will attempt to explain it in the most direct and simple way I can.
Rick Santorum, a man who is at the forefront of this national reaction, said in a speech that religion and faith should not have to end at the doors of an individual’s church; it should be able to extend into their daily life. I say to him, and any who share this belief, show me the person who is attempting to prevent you from doing so, and I will gladly fight them with you. However, I have not seen any such people, actions, legislation or movements. What I have seen is an overall attempt to reduce the influence one person’s faith or religion has over another person’s life, and this is the crux of the issue. I fully support the rights of any individual to have whatever beliefs they choose, but those beliefs must not in any way infringe upon or affect my daily life. You can pray as many times a day you wish, wherever you are, and I encourage you to do so if that is what you feel spiritually compelled to do. However, your faith may never, under any circumstances change any aspect of my existence, or the existence of any other individual. It must have absolutely no influence on what I can or can not do. I do not wish to hear about your faith unless I request that information. You have every right to take your faith outside your place of worship, but you have no right whatsoever to take it into my home, my workplace, or anywhere else in my life. It resides within yourself, and nobody has the right to persecute or belittle you for what you think, feel or believe, but you must never and may never attempt to apply your faith to the world around you in a way that affects others. Your beliefs are your own and irrelevant to the lives of those who do not share them. Not a single moment of a single day for the rest of my life should be altered or impacted by your personally held religious beliefs, and to attempt such enforcement is tyrannical.
Nobody wants to take away your faith. Nobody is trying to outlaw your religion. It simply must remain contained to your life and the lives of those who worship as you do, never straying into the lives of others. This is not a declaration of war on religion, it is simply common decency and mutual respect for the people around you, a concept that nearly every modern religion claims to believe in.
